The staff at the Bridgend branch of Nationwide Building Society came to volunteer at our Community home, Nant Lais on Friday as part of a volunteer's day.

Nationwide's Bridgend and Neath branches have chosen Emmaus South Wales as their local charity to support this year. The staff from both branches are supporting Emmaus South Wales in as many ways they can. This includes raising money, volunteering their time and also offering their banking expertise to ensure formerly homeless people get the second chance they deserve.

Eight members of staff from the Bridgend branch swapped their usual day job to help clear and clean the Community, ready for the arrival of new Companions. The staff arrived promptly at the Community home and were keen to get stuck in to help tidy the home. Companions Rob and Dave gave the staff a tour of the Community, showing them the communal areas and their rooms and sharing their story. The volunteers were really surprised at how nice the Community was and were shocked by the spacious en-suite rooms.

After their tour, the staff got to work clearing out unused furniture from storage cupboards and rooms, under the supervision of Companion Dave. All of the furniture, including beds and mattresses were placed outside ready to send back to our Superstore in Bridgend; to either be sold or donated to a family in need through solidarity.

The Nationwide staff didn't shy away from a bit of lifting and cleared four storage cupboards and two rooms in no time! They then got to work hoovering and mopping the Community before taking a well-deserved lunch break. Companion Craig had prepared Minestrone soup and a selection of sandwiches.

After lunch, the some of the Nationwide volunteers took advantage of the autumn sun by tiding up the garden and sweeping fallen leaves off the patio. Whilst the others took unwanted items back to the Superstore on Tremains Road in Bridgend.

It was a very successful day, with the whole Community being cleaned and decluttered ready for new Companions arriving. This wouldn't have been able to be achieved if it wasn't for the dedicated, hardworking staff from the Bridgend Branch of Nationwide. Everyone at Emmaus South Wales would like to thank Branch Manager Elinor Marsh-Owen and all of the Nationwide staff for their hard work and for volunteering their time to help our cause.

We look forward to working alongside both the Bridgend and Neath branches of Nationwide Building Society in the near future.
